The Spotify app has been on Apple Watch for years now, but it’s really a glorified remote control for the app running on your iPhone. That’s changing right now, with Spotify pushing a server-side change to let you stream music directly to your Apple Watch.
Nov 05, 2020 It basically served as a remote for Spotify’s iPhone app, but according to TechCrunch, Spotify began rolling out support for standalone streaming on the Apple Watch app this week. Testing for the streaming support was spied in September, and it looks like some Spotify and Apple Watch users have noticed It looks like Spotify has started rolling out support for users of the Spotify Apple Watch app to stream content from the service when you're away from your iPhone.
Yes, if you have an LTE-enabled Apple Watch, you never have to carry your iPhone while you’re out jogging. Multiple Twitter users have been showing off the new features, which is still technically in beta. Check out the tweet below from user imPatrickT, who spotted the feature yesterday. I’m more jealous of the cellular-enabled VW, though.

The Spotify streaming feature on Apple Watch works on cellular data or on WiFi, so you can use it at the gym as well if you only have the WiFi version. There doesn’t appear to be any search field though, so you’ll have to use Siri to find new tracks to listen to. Better load up your Spotify with some killer playlists before you go on that run.
It’ll also show any recently played content, so that’s one way to get your favorite tracks onto your Apple Watch without fighting with Siri.
As we said earlier, this is a server-side switch, so if you can’t see the feature on your Apple Watch yet, just wait. It’ll be on the way.

I love my Apple Watch. It gets about as much use as any tech device I own. I also love Spotify. It’s my go-to music service when at my computer or on the road. Spotify app automatically opens. Sadly, those two things have just never really worked together.

One of the better features that Spotify Premium member receive is the ability to download songs for offline listening. This feature would be great on the Apple Watch for those that want to leave the phone behind and take Spotify with them on a jog or hike, but don’t have the cellular capabilities to stream the music.

It’s still not perfect, as some Redditors have noted, saying that the app is not optimized for the screen sizes of the Apple Watch Series 4, but those are all things that can easily be adapted and is honestly the purpose of beta testing.
